As a package holiday, Dubai is cheaper. Five nights from South Africa including flights and a hotel starts around EUR 970 (USD $1,070) per person, while a full Namibia trip starts near EUR 2,300 (USD $2,500) and flights are extra. As a place to actually be, Namibia is far cheaper. Living costs in Windhoek run at roughly half of Dubai’s, and a beer costs about a seventh. The two are almost never compared honestly because a five night city break and a two week desert crossing are not the same purchase.
You see the comparison made a lot, usually by someone arguing that South Africans fly over an extraordinary country to reach a shopping mall. There is something in that. But the version of the argument that says Namibia is half the price is wrong, and it is worth getting the numbers right before deciding.

Per night, the cheapest Dubai package works out near EUR 195 (USD $215) including your flights. The four night Namibia package works out near EUR 240 (USD $260) and you still have to get there.
That is not because Namibia is being greedy. Dubai has hundreds of high volume hotels and an airline built to fill them. Namibian lodges are small, remote and supplied over hundreds of kilometres of gravel. Scale is the whole difference.
So Where Does Namibia Actually Win on Price?
Once you have arrived, and the gap is not small.

Alcohol is the outlier and it is the one that shifts a holiday budget most. Dubai taxes and restricts it heavily. If your idea of an evening involves a few drinks, Namibia is not slightly cheaper, it is a different order of magnitude.
Restaurant prices are only about 30 percent higher in Dubai, which is less than most people expect. And a handful of things are actually cheaper there, with potatoes, onions and tomatoes all running below Windhoek prices, because Namibia imports a great deal of its fresh produce.
That last point matters more than it sounds, because it is where self-drivers get caught.
What People Actually Spend Once They Land
Package prices are only half of either trip. The other half is what leaves your account daily, and travellers are more candid about that than any brochure.
On the Dubai side, a traveller with flights and a hotel already paid, including breakfast and dinner, asked whether USD 1,000 would cover ten days of sightseeing, the Burj Khalifa and one extra meal a day. The answer from residents was yes, comfortably, with the caveat that taxis instead of the metro will eat it fast and that premium queue-skip tickets at the attractions add up. Another family of four did ten days across Dubai and Abu Dhabi for about USD 5,000 all in including flights, staying in mid-range hotels and skipping the expensive attractions.
On the Namibia side, travellers and Namibians answering the same question land on N$1,000 to N$3,000 per person per day for food, drinks and small activities, with accommodation and fuel already paid. N$1,000 is described as the low end. A Namibian in the same thread pointed out those are tourist numbers and that locals spend nowhere near it.
Roughly comparable, in other words, once you strip out alcohol. Which is exactly where the Namibia trip has costs the Dubai one does not.
The Namibia Costs Nobody Warns You About
The daily living figures assume you are in Windhoek. Most of a Namibia trip is not.
A couple who spent two and a half weeks driving a loop of the country in a rooftop tent 4×4, cooking about two thirds of their meals, reported that food was more expensive than they expected and not far off UK supermarket prices, and that fuel was expensive. That is the honest version. Remote lodges and small town supermarkets do not price like the capital.
Then there is the vehicle. A Dubai holiday needs taxis and a metro card. A Namibia trip needs a 4×4 for two weeks, and our full cost breakdown puts a fourteen day self-drive for two at around N$133,500 all in.
None of that makes Namibia bad value. It makes it a different kind of purchase, which is the actual heart of this comparison.
You Are Not Buying the Same Thing
Five nights is a complete Dubai holiday. You land, you are in a hotel within forty minutes, and everything you came for is inside a twenty kilometre radius.
Five nights in Namibia is a drive. The country is 824,000 square kilometres and the good parts are hundreds of kilometres apart on gravel. Travellers who post their trips afterwards almost all report ten to sixteen nights, and the advice given to anyone shorter is to cut destinations rather than compress them.
So the fair comparison is not EUR 970 (USD $1,070) against EUR 950 (USD $1,050). It is a five night city break against a two week expedition, and of course the expedition costs more. Which Should You Actually Book?
Honestly, it depends on how much time you have and what you want to come home with.
Dubai suits a short window. If you have five or six days, want zero logistics, and are travelling with people who will not enjoy six hours of gravel, it is the better buy. It is also easier with small children and in the European winter.
Namibia suits a proper holiday. Two weeks, a willingness to drive, and an interest in landscape rather than shopping and restaurants. Nobody comes back from Sossusvlei at sunrise saying they wish they had gone to a mall.
The drinks budget is the honest tiebreaker. Two people having two drinks a night for ten nights is a difference of several thousand rand between the two countries, and it is the line item most people forget when they compare a headline package price.
The Claim to Retire
Namibia is not half the price of Dubai as a holiday. For a short trip booked from South Africa it is usually more expensive, because you are buying distance rather than density.
What is true is that Namibia is roughly half the price to be in, and that a Namibia trip is not really comparable to a Dubai one because it is twice as long and does something entirely different. If you have two weeks and you have been flying over this country to reach a shopping centre, that is worth reconsidering. Just do it with the right number in your head.
