TL;DR: Your first day in Windhoek should be short. Clear immigration, which travellers report can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 3 hours, buy an MTC tourist SIM before you leave the airport, take a shuttle or taxi the 45 km into town, and sleep. Collect the car and do the big grocery shop the next morning. The one thing not to do is drive on to Sossusvlei or Etosha on landing day. Add up the queue, the car handover and a 5 to 7 hour drive and you arrive tired, on gravel, close to dark.
Most Windhoek guides jump straight to the churches and rooftop bars. The part nobody plans is the time between the plane door and your first bed, which is where first-timers make the mistake they talk about afterwards.
This guide follows arrival day in the order it happens. If you would rather have the arrival day and the first drive fitted to your flight times, Johan builds the whole route around when you land after a free call, and a booking agency Mantis works with can book the beds and the car.
How Long Does Immigration Take at Windhoek Airport?
Longer than you expect, and it varies a lot. One traveller who landed in June waited 1 to 1.5 hours in the visa on arrival line and met others who had waited up to 3 hours. Another first-timer called immigration at Windhoek airport extremely slow and said to be near the front of the plane when it lands. On the other side, a couple flying economy were out in 40 minutes, visa included. Treat 40 minutes as a good day and 3 hours as a bad one.
A few things make it easier.
- Sort the visa before you fly. Most Western passport holders now pay a fee of about €80 (US$88), N$1,600 per adult, either online as an eVisa or at the airport. Our step by step visa guide explains which route is quicker and what to carry.
- Use the bathroom on the plane. The line winds through a small arrivals corridor and one traveller noted there are no toilets you can reach from it.
- Arrival time matters. One traveller found the airport packed mid-morning and almost empty mid-afternoon. You cannot always choose your flight, but it tells you what to expect.
Pack a change of clothes in your hand luggage too. A tight connection in Johannesburg left one family’s bags behind, and they had to buy basics in Windhoek the next day.
How Do I Get From Hosea Kutako Airport to Windhoek?
Hosea Kutako International Airport sits about 45 km east of Windhoek, according to both Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. The road is tarred and the drive takes 40 to 45 minutes. There are no services on the way, so it is a straight run into town.
| Option | Rough cost | Best for |
| Shared shuttle, booked ahead | N$250 to N$350 per person (about €13 to €18, US$14 to US$19) | Solo travellers and couples on a budget |
| Taxi from the arrivals hall | N$400 to N$550 per car, or N$400 per person and N$600 for a couple, depending on the source (about €20 to €30, US$22 to US$33) | Families, late arrivals, anyone who wants to go straight to the door |
| Hotel or guesthouse transfer | Similar to a taxi, ask when you book the room | Being met by name after a long flight |
| Collect your rental car at the airport | Part of your rental, plus the handover time | Travellers who land early and slept on the plane |
Shuttle and taxi prices from Kupi’s airport guide and Wikivoyage, checked September 2026. Agree a taxi fare before you get in. There is no Uber in Windhoek.
Can I Drive Straight From the Airport to Sossusvlei or Etosha?
You can, and plenty of people plan to. The driving time from Hosea Kutako International Airport to Sossusvlei is one of the most common things first-timers look up. The drive itself is not the problem. The problem is everything that has to happen first, all of it after a night flight.
Here is the arrival day added up for a traveller who collects the car at the airport and heads for the dunes at Sesriem.
| Step | Good day | Bad day | Where the figure comes from |
| Immigration and visa | 40 min | 3 hours | Traveller reports, three separate trips |
| SIM card at the MTC counter | 10 min | 15 min | Traveller report |
| Car handover | 30 min | 1.5 hours | A rental company’s own estimate, and one traveller’s handover |
| Airport to Windhoek | 45 min | 45 min | Airport guides |
| Windhoek to Sesriem | 5 hours | 7 hours | Windhoek to Sossusvlei route guide |
| Total after landing | About 7 hours | About 12.5 hours | Our calculation from the rows above |
The total is a sum of the ranges above, not a measured figure. It leaves out food, fuel and photo stops. Etosha works out much the same. The official park site puts Windhoek to Andersson Gate at roughly 430 km, about 5 hours without stops and 6.5 to 7 hours in practice.
Even the good day means seven hours of queues and driving on top of the flight. The bad day never reaches camp in daylight. Park gates close at sunset, and most of the Sossusvlei route is gravel, hard work even on fresh eyes.
One traveller did exactly this. He landed after a ten hour flight from Munich, went through immigration, collected the car and an eSIM, and drove for Sesriem. By the time he reached the Spreetshoogte Pass he was, in his words, fried, with two hours still to go. A stop at Solitaire got him through, and his verdict was that he would not do it again. A traveller on another trip put the rule in one line: do not drive anywhere else on the first day.
The fix costs half a day at most. Sleep in Windhoek, collect the car in the morning and leave early. You arrive in daylight, and the first gravel road feels like part of the holiday instead of a test.
Should I Collect the Rental Car at the Airport or in Town?
Most rental companies will do either, and for most first-timers the morning after is better. A proper handover is not a key on a counter. For a 4×4 with camping gear it covers the tyres, the jack, the fridge, the tent and the rules in your contract. One traveller’s handover took 1.5 hours, and that was a good company doing it properly.
Doing that after a night flight is how people miss things. Before you drive away, check there are two spare wheels on a 4×4 and a working jack, and photograph every scratch. If you land early and slept on the plane, taking the car on arrival is fine. Just do not add a long drive to it.
Wherever you collect it, ask the rental staff to walk you through the local road rules before you pull out. The four-way stop further down this page is the one visitors mention most.
Will You Have Money on Arrival in Namibia?
Yes, and it is simpler than it looks. The Namibian dollar is pegged one to one to the South African rand, and rand notes are accepted everywhere in Namibia, as the Namibian dollar’s history explains. Your change may come back as a mix of both. The reverse does not work, so spend your Namibian dollars before you leave.
There are ATMs and exchange counters at the airport. Travellers report that cards work almost everywhere, including fuel stations, supermarkets, lodges and craft markets. Taking cash from an ATM with a debit card usually beats the exchange rate at a counter. Leave euros and dollars at home, very few places take them.
Carry some small notes and coins anyway. Fuel stations are full service and it is normal to tip the attendant. At malls, a car guard will offer to watch your car, and a few coins are the expected thanks.
Where Do I Get a SIM Card at Windhoek Airport?
Buy it at the airport, before you leave. MTC, the main network, sells two tourist packages that it says are available only at Hosea Kutako International Airport. In town you are in the normal queue at an MTC shop, which one traveller warned can take hours.
| MTC package | Price | Lasts | Data |
| Leisure | N$349 (about €17, US$19) | 14 days | 10.1 GB plus N$65 for calls and SMS |
| Premium | N$659 (about €33, US$36) | 30 days | 20.1 GB plus N$125 for calls and SMS |
Prices from MTC’s tourist package page, checked 19 September 2026.
Bring your passport, because every SIM in Namibia has to be registered to an ID. Travellers describe the booth near the baggage carousel and another shop by the exit, and the whole thing took one couple 10 to 15 minutes. When staff ask you to test the data, switch your phone’s wifi off first, or you will be testing the airport wifi instead.
If your phone only takes an eSIM, check before you fly. MTC launched eSIM for local customers in September 2025, but its tourist page does not say whether the airport packages come as an eSIM, so ask at the counter or buy a travel eSIM at home.
Where Should I Stay My First Night in Windhoek?
Pick somewhere quiet, near restaurants, with safe parking if you already have the car. Klein Windhoek is the usual answer, with guesthouses and restaurants close together. Locals asked by a family where they would stay named Klein Windhoek, Ludwigsdorf and Avis as the safest areas, and the central hotels put you close to the sights.
With young children, one local suggested Olympia, which is near a public swimming pool and two malls. Maerua Mall has an arcade and a trampoline park, which is a good way to burn off a long flight. Another local was blunt that you will need a car or taxi for anything with kids, and that most of the good family outings are out of town. For one night that does not matter.
Is Windhoek safe to walk around? The centre is fine by day. After dark, take a radio taxi rather than walking, and visit Katutura with a local guide rather than on your own. What is and is not risky in Windhoek covers this street by street.
One night is enough for most people. One first-timer said Windhoek did little for them, and another couple stayed a single night on arrival and one before flying home, purely for convenience.
What Is Windhoek Worth on Your First Day?
If you land early, the compact centre rewards a few hours.
- Christuskirche, the Lutheran church on the hill built between 1907 and 1910, is the landmark on every postcard.
- The Independence Memorial Museum next door is free and its top floor looks over the whole city. It opens 9:00 to 17:00 and is closed on Sundays.
- Alte Feste, the old fort, and the Parliament Gardens are a short walk away.
- The Namibia Craft Centre is worth a walk through so you know what to buy at the end of the trip, when weight and breakage no longer matter.
For dinner, Joe’s Beerhouse is the classic first meal, with kudu, oryx and springbok on the menu. For something more local, kapana, beef grilled over open fires at Oshetu Community Market in Katutura, is cheap and good, and best done with a guide. One traveller found that many guesthouses have an arrangement with a taxi company for a short city tour, which covers the sights and Katutura in one go. For a sunset drink, the Hilton’s Sky Bar has the view.
Go easy on the celebration. Windhoek sits at about 1,650 metres above sea level, and after a long dry flight that is enough to leave you dehydrated and heavy-headed. Drink water, eat before you drink beer, and remember you are driving tomorrow.
What Are the 4-Way Stops in Namibia?
This is the road rule visitors mention most. At many town junctions you will see a small 4 or 3 under the stop sign. It means every road stops, and cars go in the order they arrived. The first car to stop is the first to go, then the next, and so on around the junction. It feels odd for the first two or three, then it becomes automatic. Make eye contact and do not rush.
Namibia drives on the left. Traffic circles also catch people out. One traveller wrote that the indicating rules there caught them completely off guard. Sources disagree on the details, so ask at the car handover how locals signal at a traffic circle and follow what the rental staff tell you.
Outside town the roads change character fast. How B, C and D roads differ explains why 300 km on gravel can take a whole day.
The Morning After: What to Leave for Tomorrow
This is the day that sets up the trip, so give it the morning.
Collect the car early and take the handover slowly. Ask every question you have, especially about the spare wheels, the fridge and what to do if something breaks far from town.
Do the big shop after the handover, not on the afternoon you land. One first-timer did their first grocery run at Grove Mall and found it easy, and another traveller said Grove has everything, including a pharmacy and clothes if your bags went missing. Plan around the hours, because they are shorter than many visitors expect.
| Grove Mall, Windhoek | Hours |
| Monday to Thursday | 09:00 to 19:00 |
| Friday | 09:00 to 20:00 |
| Saturday | 08:00 to 19:00 |
| Sunday and public holidays | 09:00 to 17:00 |
From the mall’s own trading hours, checked 19 September 2026. Individual shops can differ, and many smaller shops in Namibia close early on Saturday or all of Sunday.
Do not overbuy. One couple loaded up on a huge supply of food and water in Windhoek and then found small shops at most campsites and lodges. Stock up properly on what you cannot get later, and which Windhoek supermarket to use for what saves you a second trip.
Then leave, and arrive in daylight. Aim to be on the road by mid-morning at the latest, and plan to reach your first stop well before sunset. If Sossusvlei is first, the three routes to Sesriem compare the passes, the fuel stops and the real drive times. For everything else about the trip ahead, the full self-drive guide covers routes, costs and what to expect on the road.
If you want the first night, the car collection and the first drive worked out around your actual flight, that is exactly what Johan plans. The first call is free and a custom itinerary is €100 (US$110). Self-drive trips planned around you shows how it works, or book a free call with Johan and tell him when you land.
